The Door Opens Through Language: Black August Twi Classes Begin Today

Repatriation becomes real in the everyday moments: greeting an elder correctly, understanding what is being said at a family gathering, buying food without retreating into English, or hearing the meaning carried in an Akan name. That is why the Decade of Our Repatriation is putting language where it belongs—at the center of coming home.

Black August Twi language classes and cultural orientation begin today, Saturday, August 29. Ɔbenfo Ọbádéle Kambon announced the eight-class program from Abibitumi headquarters in Akuapem Mampong, inviting participants to join in person at the University of Ghana or online by Zoom.

  • Begins: Saturday, August 29, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. GMT
  • Attend: Jamrock Restaurant at the University of Ghana or online via Zoom
  • Program: Eight classes with Twi language instruction and cultural orientation
  • Cost: 500 GHS or US$50
  • Member offer: 50% off for members of selected organizations

From diaspora to destiny means learning how to speak

DOOR documents the movement of Black people from the diaspora into a future built through citizenship, land, institutions, culture and community. Language connects all of those areas. It is not an accessory added after relocation. It is one of the ways a returnee learns to participate, listen and build relationships with greater depth.

The course is designed for people who want to become conversational, including recent repatriates and those who have lived in Ghana for some time but still need structured instruction. Ɔbenfo Kambon describes the program as university-level language teaching offered at an unusually accessible price. His linguistic work focuses on Akan, including Asante Twi, Akuapem Twi and Fante.

Black August asks us to study struggle, discipline and self-determination. Learning an Afrikan language is one concrete way to carry that reflection into daily practice. The door is open. Walking through it includes learning how home speaks.

Register for the Black August Twi classes.
